Welcome to the online archive of "Local Files", which started as a newsletter reviewing educational software which I circulated to local schools. I am not a computer expert, I am simply a teacher with some spare time who enjoys computers. As such, I find I am often asked what software is worth buying and what is not. Anything you find here is something that I think is worth buying, or worth the downloading time if it is free. Having said that, no software is perfect, and I will from time to time mention flaws.
I am not attempting to give even coverage of the curriculum in the software I review, as in my experience a great deal of mathematics software is suited to New Zealand's style of education, while rather less language software is, and some learning areas have very little software written for them at all. I will instead review software that appeals to me, is inexpensive, and runs on smaller, older computers like those in many classrooms. From time to time I will also review useful websites. I will review software from a Windows perspective, as that is what I have access to.
As my friends locally will realise, I soon got too busy to keep up regular newsletters and posts, but I still add things that look useful from time to time.
